Psychodynamic Observation in Old Age
Start Date : 2011
Summary
The Psychodynamic Observational Approach is a specific training and research method enabling the observer to undertake the equivalent of an ‘emotional scan’ of the observed setting. It provides a highly effective and rich developmental learning experience for all professionals with an interest in old age.
If you have undertaken training in Dementia Care Mapping, this course will complement and further develop and deepen your observational capacity in the workplace.
Aims & Objectives
- Provide you with a key foundation tool for developing good practice and quality interventions in your own place of work.
- Enable you to use observational data to augment current research literature on useful interventions for residential and nursing homes, acute general, rehabilitation and continuing care settings.
- Promote awareness through familiarity with the varied observational settings presented in supervision, of the diverse ethnic, cultural and social factors and diversity of experience regarding the ageing process within the observed setting.
- Learn in depth about conscious and unconscious factors which can impede or support development and adjustment to transition in later life using the lens of the Observational Triangle.
- Deepen your capacity for reflective observation, refine your skill in writing detailed observation notes, and use the opportunity to process your experience and the personal impact of paying close attention to the relationship between the older person and staff in the observed setting in a specialist supervision group.
- Develop your capacity and confidence in becoming an internal consultant to the unconscious atmosphere of the observed setting.

This course can be taken on a modular basis in conjunction with ‘Emotional Mapping for Old Age and Dementia Services’and ‘Dynamics of Depression and Dementia in Old Age’
