Psychodynamic Observation & Emotional Mapping

Summary

This programme can be taken as a full post-qualification course over 1-2 years.  Alternatively each individual module can be taken as a short course in its own right. Each module aims to strengthen and extend the capacity for developing effective understanding and high quality thinking and intervention in dementia care, mental health and psychological therapy services for older people.

Requirements for Age Matters Certificate: Completion of one module.
Requirements for Age Matters Diploma: Completion of all three modules, including satisfactory submission of all written components.

Aims & Objectives

  • Develop innovative thinking in relationship to the National Dementia Strategy
  • Introduce a whole systems approach incorporating therapeutic intervention in the design, development and delivery of Memory Services
  • Apply psychoanalytic thinking to areas of clinical challenge including depression, dementia, trauma, suicide, falls
  • Develop a psychodynamic framework for applied clinical work including assessment, individual, brief, and group psychotherapy, and horticultural therapeutics
  • Become a reflective observer using the methodological framework of psychodynamic observation in old age settings
  • Enhance supervisory placement skills
  • Gain an understanding of the importance of early experience and its relevance to later life through a guided exploration of relevant psychoanalytic concepts
  • Gain an understanding of organisational dynamics in the workplace with particular reference to later life
  • Individual Modules 2010-11 include: Emotional Mapping in Old Age, Psychodynamic Observation as a Research and CPD method in Old Age, Dynamics of Depression and Dementia in Old Age

Who is this for?

This multi-disciplinary CPD programme has been designed for staff working with people who are older including: psychiatrists, clinical and counselling psychologists, nurses, admiral nurses, occupational therapists, managers/ staff of nursing and residential homes, social workers, counsellors, psychotherapists, art and music therapists.
